Second Grade Curriculum
Welcome to the Second Grade!
I hope this information will be a helpful guide to you. While I have included the basic information that I feel will be necessary to you as your child enters the second grade, this is certainly not a complete guide, so if you have questions or suggestions please visit with me. I look forward to sharing the next year with you!

SCOPE AND SEQUENCE
BIBLE
Through scripture and Bible stories the students will learn solid biblical principles for forming a biblical world view.
GEOGRAPHY AND HISTORY
The focus is on the people who built America and how they lived. Children do some map work and learn the location of many states.
GRAMMAR & SPELLING
Daily grammar and spelling lessons are taught using the Treasures curriculum. Correct grammar and spelling are also a part of the students’ weekly writing work.
MATHEMATICS
The students will be increasing their knowledge in the following areas: time, fractions, measurement, geometry, and place value. Mastery of the addition/subtraction facts to 12 is important. The main accomplishment for this age is to master the process of regrouping in addition and subtractions. Multiplication is introduced toward the end of the year.
READING
Emphasis is on the meaning of written material, which includes many forms of comprehension. The phonics and word study portions of this subject review broadened concepts from first grade. Recreational reading is encouraged.
SCIENCE
Our study of Life Science and Earth Science are alternated each year with Physical Science and Space and Technology.
LITERATURE
Read Aloud: Every day the student will be read to from good literature.
Possible Titles: Author:

CLASSROOM RULES
1. Respect yourself, respect others, respect your school.
2. Always do your best without complaining.
3. Raise your hand to speak.
4. Follow directions quickly.
5. Never leave the room without permission.
REFOCUS PROCEDURE
Refocus sheets are a way of informing you of the opportunities your child has during the week to “refocus” or change an inappropriate behavior. After a student has been given a reminder of the appropriate behavior that is not being exhibited (e.g. being quiet during study times, keeping hands and feet to self, etc), s/he is given the opportunity to think about his/her actions and make the decision to change his/her behavior to reflect more positive conduct. In order to encourage the student to change his/her behavior, s/he is asked to go to a designated place and complete a refocus sheet. The student will be allowed to return to his/her schoolwork when s/he is ready.
Each refocus sheet given will be matched with a progressive consequence at the teacher’s discretion.
Please do not be overly upset if your child receives a refocus sheet. This does not mean that your child has been “bad.” It merely means that your child has needed an opportunity to work on improving behavior. Please sign any refocus sheets your child receives and return them the following morning.
Students who accumulate multiple refocus sheets for the same behavior during a grading period will have an appointment scheduled to discuss a plan of action.
Obscene, vulgar or profane language will be dealt with following the Refocus Procedure. A copy of the Refocus sheet will be submitted to the Administration that day. At the Administration’s discretion, additional consequences may be imposed depending on the severity of the language. Continued violations will result in a conference with the parent(s), and Administration.
OFFICE REFERRAL PROCEDURE
Office referral must occur for significant unacceptable behavior, such as:
- Rebellion: Outright disobedience in response to instruction.
- Fighting: Striking someone in anger with the intent to harm.
If these significant behaviors occur, the following actions will result:
- The student will be removed from classroom or activity.
- The school will contact the parent.
The following statement gives our focus for coming to school:
I came to school to learn and I will learn. I will act in such a way that I will be proud of myself and others will be proud of me too. Because God is my helper, I will have a great day!
HOMEWORK
20-30 minutes of homework will be given on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
LABELING ITEMS
Please label all items that your child will be bringing to school such as: individual crayons, pencils, scissors, ruler, erasers, pencil box, and ALL CLOTHING. If it can drop on the floor or be laid down somewhere, label it. Initials work well on small items. Every year we find clothing items in the lost and found. If they are labeled we can return them to the owner.
SNACKS
Please send only nutritious, non-sugary items.
Here are some ideas: Fruit, Yogurt, Muffins, Veggies, Breads, Chips, Pretzels, Crackers and Cheese or Peanut Butter.
Please no candy.
BOOK ORDERS
Several times a year a Scholastic book order will be sent home. The books are fairly inexpensive and our class receives free books with each order. If you choose to order, please return the order form to the teacher with a check payable to Scholastic. Do not write the check to Hosanna.
PARENT VOLUNTEERS
Room Parents have played a very important role in my classroom in the past. I welcome and anticipate your help! Some of the tasks include helping individual students or small groups, correcting papers, pulling pages from workbooks and sorting them, and running errands. There will be a sign-up sheet in my room for days and times. Any help you can provide is much appreciated. If helping in the classroom does not work for you, we can always use chaperones for field trips and help with class parties.
