SCOPE AND SEQUENCE

BIBLE

Bible is the most important half hour of the school day.  It is the first subject that is taught each day, and by its very nature should be the most interesting and exciting subject.  The Bible is presented through telling stories from the Old and New Testaments.  Bible time will include the Pledges to the Flag, memory verses, prayer time, and Bible lessons.

MATH & NUMBERS

Our math and number curriculum will provide practice and evaluation of many math concepts; including number concepts 1 through 100, number formation, number words, money and the telling of time.  Simple addition concepts are taught up to a sum of ten and beginning subtraction concepts are introduced.

LANGUAGE ARTS/WRITING

In Kindergarten, students will be introduced to quality literature in a variety of genres.  They will also address all of the following concepts: phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, high-fluency words, concepts words, vocabulary, writing and fluency.  Students will learn manuscript writing in a program that is correlated with the Language Arts program.  As they learn to recognize letters of the alphabet and their sounds, they will also learn correct writing formation of those letters.  Creative writing will reflect the Language Arts themes..

SCIENCE

Children are fascinated by the world around them and are eager to learn science related themes.  Our students learn about Life Science, Earth Science, Physical Science, Space and Technology.  The students learn through observations, classifying, predicting, communication and visuals.

SOCIAL STUDIES

There are three basic areas that your student will explore during their kindergarten year.  We will begin with a unit on community helpers.  This unit is designed to teach your child about some of the people that live and work in their community.  We will do a unit study on America: Our Great Country, introducing your child to a few simple facts about history, geography, people, and great leaders of the United States.  It is our desire to develop a love for our great country and for them to notice the way God has blessed us, and for them to appreciate all He has done.  Our final unit will be Children of the World, introducing your student to children who live in other countries.  Our goal is to develop an interest in other people and places, and for them to realize that God loves not just them, but children all around the world.

CLASSROOM RULES

1. Listen carefully.

2. Follow directions of your teacher and any other Hosanna adult.

3. Respect others.  Be kind with your words and actions.

4. Respect school and personal property.

5. Work and play safely.

REFOCUS PROCEDURE

ELEMENTARY REFOCUS SHEETS
Refocus sheets are a way of informing you of the opportunities your child has during the week to “refocus” or change an inappropriate behavior.  After a student has been given a reminder of the appropriate behavior that is not being exhibited (e.g. being quiet during study times, keeping hands and feet to self, etc), s/he is given the opportunity to think about his/her actions and make the decision to change his/her behavior to reflect more positive conduct.  In order to encourage the student to change his/her behavior, s/he is asked to go to a designated place and complete a refocus sheet.  The student will be allowed to return to his/her schoolwork when s/he is ready.

Each refocus sheet given will be matched with a progressive consequence at the teacher’s discretion.

Please do not be overly upset if your child receives a refocus sheet.  This does not mean that your child has been “bad.”  It merely means that your child has needed an opportunity to work on improving behavior.  Please sign any refocus sheets your child receives and return them the following morning.

Students who accumulate multiple refocus sheets for the same behavior during a grading period will have an appointment scheduled to discuss a plan of action.

Obscene, vulgar or profane language will be dealt with following the Refocus Procedure.  A copy of the Refocus sheet will be submitted to the Administration that day.  At the Administration’s discretion, additional consequences may be imposed depending on the severity of the language.  Continued violations will result in a conference with the parent(s), and Administration.

OFFICE REFERRAL PROCEDURE

Office referral must occur for significant unacceptable behavior, such as:

  1. Rebellion:  Outright disobedience in response to instruction.
  2. Fighting:  Striking someone in anger with the intent to harm.

If these significant behaviors occur, the following actions will result:

  1. The student will be removed from classroom or activity.
  2. The school will contact the parent.

HOMEWORK

Every Monday a homework sheet will be sent home.  Everything that has been presented in class will be on the sheet.  Please give your child an opportunity to share what they are learning.  Using the homework sheet will help reinforce this learning with your child.  Establishing a habit of working with your child three days a week will help form good homework practices in your child.  Please initial each day, Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday, that your child does the homework.  Your child should then return the homework sheet on Friday.
Every week the children will have a new Bible verse to learn.  The children will have an opportunity during chapel to recite the verse.

LABELING ITEMS

Please label all pieces of clothing.  Every year many clothing items end up in the lost and found.  If they are labeled we can return them to their owner.

BIRTHDAYS

We will have a combined birthday party, including all children celebrating birthdays for the month, on the 3rd Thursday of every month.  Summer birthdays will be celebrated in June.

SNACKS

We will have a snack time each school day.  Each child is responsible for providing this for themselves.  Please send only nutritious, non-sugary items.  A small drink will be allowed.

Here are some ideas: Fruit, Yogurt, Muffins, Veggies, Breads, Chips, Pretzels, Crackers and Cheese or Peanut Butter.

PARENT VOLUNTEERS

We welcome your help in the classroom.  If you would like to come in and lend a hand with correcting papers, pulling pages from workbooks and sorting them, or helping with writing groups or parties, please let me know.

BOOK ORDERS

About once a month I will be sending home book order forms which you may purchase books for your child.  This is a wonderful way to get quality books at a reasonable price.  Each time you order books, we earn free bonus points which we can spend on books for our classrooms.  What a great way to build our class library!

SHOW & TELL

Show & Tell will begin the third week of school.  I will send home a Show & Tell schedule with your children being assigned a day.  If your child’s day falls on Monday where there is no school, they may bring their Show & Tell on Tuesday.  If their day falls on a Friday, they may bring theirs on Thursday.  Please remind your student that they may only bring 1 item, as we simply don’t have time for multiple things.  All items need to fit in your student’s backpack and will only be taken out at Show & tell time.  If you would like to bring a pet, please make prior arrangements with your child’s teacher.
